This new single by Brownsville’s Upon Your Dead Body maneuvers with the flexible Midwest emo sound, and the classic fury of its D.C. counterpart. It’s a dizzying rock ride — ominously slow intro/outro, intense speedups, dramatic stoptime fills — and for all its harsh chords and shrieking vocals, its well-suited as a pop song too. Elastic bass lines and tight drumming keep things smooth and steady as Efrain Benavidez delivers vocal melodies that are as hammy as they are high-register.

Despite the school-boy vocals, the song actually dives into drug addiction and suicidal thoughts. It’s morbidly point blank with lines like “I twitch in disgust. My leg wont stop shaking. . . I swear I can stop when I want.” It also gets disturbingly personal (“Suicide is the only answer to every question that I've ever had. . . I'll go to heaven to talk to my Dad.”) In all the swirling darkness is a sense of self-improvement and rejuvenation too, with the last refrain “this life is over,” signifying the end, but also a new beginning. It’s thematically fitting with Benavidez’s gift for rejuvenating classic emo styles.
