Valley Swerve - Songs From Paradis Island (review)
Through anime samples, vaporwave remixes, and nostalgic instrumental beats, Valley Swerve’s music has made its way through dedicated niche communities. Valley Swerve continues to thrive on that theme and imagery, with his latest EP being inspired by Attack On Titan, adding to the fanfare while viewers wait for a finale release date.
It’s cinematic and adventurous enough to connect with fans, but those unfamiliar with the series will still be treated to a showcase of diverse electronic and hip-hip styles drenched in Valley Swerve’s signature vaporwave techniques and haunting atmosphere. His rhythms are also as strong as ever with 808 drops that are crisp, slick, and massive, and house beats that bring a euphoric energy.
The album flows as well as any good beat-tape should, but there’s plenty of differentiating features throughout. True to the name, “My War Phonk” is a mix of AOT’s “My War” with gritty Memphis horrorcore. It’s one of the most battle-ready, yet vibey, beats since Clams Casino’s “Palace.” There’s choppy and moody witch-house in “Caged Requiem” that is playlist-worthy. The frigid ambient “Ode to Fallen Garrison” sounds like 90’s era Biosphere updated for the new age.
Of course, there’s also some of the Valley Swerve we’ve come to know over the past year. In “Our Names Live On” and the second half of “Attack on My DM” is the muffled home-listening dance sound that has been a staple of his recent string of singles, which would make great additions for anyone’s future funk mix.
The theme stays solid, while allowing breadth and depth for mood and sound. It’s one for the anime fans, but also for anyone with an appreciation for the all-devouring sonics of today’s hip-hop and electronic beat-making.
Score: 8/10
