First Impression: Pillowsnake - ALL VALLEY SATRIALES
After a prominent three-year stretch of blowing the minds of even the most niche of music fans with his lo-fi, noise, and psychedelic treatment of rock, pop, and hip-hop, Pillowsnake slowed his output a bit, releasing only a couple of collab songs in 2021 along with his Sopranos-inspired “6000 YEARS AINT NOTHING IN ETERNITY'S TIME,” crooning with autotune as if it’s Pillowsnake’s 808s & Heartbreak. Now, he is back with a compact, but dense, trance-inducing flurry of dynamics (and possibly referencing the Sopranos again).
Dancey breakbeats lead to punk breakdowns while some Flying Lotus-esque psychedelia lurks in the background. Then, jazzy guitar chords create a woozy serenity before guttural growls top off Pillowsnake’s great return. It seems as if he has done some housekeeping in life and is now suited up, getting back on track with new conviction. “Spot your fake friends. Drop your patience. Tie them laces. Throw them faces.”
Pillowsnake has always expanded the definitions of what a “good” song can be. Now that his tighter songwriting and distinguished textures are more accessible than ever, it’s great to see him expand on what Pillowsnake can be as well.
