First Impression: Upon Your Dead Body - You're My Favorite
Brownsville- and Harlingen-based emo and pop-punk duo Upon Your Dead Body always know how to make the most of their anticipated singles, and this release is no exception. Two weeks after dropping “Such Small Hands,” a short creeping episode of night visions, they’re back with a full-length single that’s as smooth as it is seething.
Everything just sticks. The riffage is instantly memorable, dancing around inside the tight pocket of the drum’s rhythms. The singing is soulful and as poised as ever, while the production is pristine, making the moods even more immersive.
The song’s conflict involves being romantically spurned, feeling like a number two to the protagonist’s number one. There’s also some vengefulness in the startling imagery - “Does he know what you do when you’re alone in your room, thinking of me, wishing your mouth was full?”
It’s a strong enough single to reignite UYDB after a quiet year for the band so far. It’s definitely deserving of a music video or video performance (let’s hope!). It’s also deserving of a listen from you, dear reader.
